We pick up the evolution of Vlooienburg again in 1890. The neighbourhood has changed a lot. The industrial revolution, which arrived late in Amsterdam, is now on full speed. Vlooienburg, like many other neighbourhoods in Amsterdam, quickly transformed into a place where too many people lived packed in slum like conditions. In between the houses, industry rose, in this location: large diamond factories. The visual documentary evidence of the neighbourhood increases in the second half of the 19th century after the invention of photography, which allows us to have more accurate and detailed picture of the physical composition of the neighbourhood.
