The 3D reconstruction of Vlooienburg originally aimed to visualise the historical transformations of physcial, urban space for visitors of the exhibition "Waterlooplein. De buurt binnenstebuiten" (Waterloo square. The neighbourhood inside out) at the Jewish museum in Amsterdam in 2020. It was created to be viewed in an application that allowed visitors to interactively explore the historical phases of the neighbourhood in three dimensions. Only a small part of the model is used in the current presentation. This video recording of the application gives you an idea of the original experience and scope of the reconstructions.
The exhibition was not the only context of creation. This reconstruction was part of a larger research project at the University of Amsterdam, named diaspora and identity. It aimed to reconstruct live at Vlooienburg from historical sources and archaeological evidence, focussing on the Jewish inhabitants of the neighbourhood.
