The immigrants brought their customs and material culture with them, but not their building culture. The typical 17th century Dutch building style was adopted by everyone, even for new builds. Even the earliest synagogues were simply making use of existing buildings. However, houses were modified completely on the interior to make them suit their purpose. The neighbourhood started to change its face quite drastically over the course of the 17th century, but these changes mainly followed trends in architecture styles, and made possible with increasing wealth.
