Shop owners and craftsmen primarily lived in houses on the inner streets. The variety is large. In the Lange Houtstraat just on this block we find a button maker, a baker, a butcher a mason, a box maker, a boater, and a knife maker (unpublished notes Hans Bonke). Elsewhere in Vlooienburg we also find a number of inns, bars and a ball play court, with attached amenities (Hell 2020). Historian Maarten Hell (2020) sketches a picture of a lively neighbourhood, where illegal bars, gambling houses, and prostitution were common sights.
