To stimulate the wood traders to move their business, the city council offered to improve the quays in front of the houses free of charge. The quay in front of the houses was originally the private possession of the house owner, who was also expected to finance its upkeep. The new stone and brick quays reflect the new gentrified status of the neighbourhood.
