In this model, the buildings shaded in grey represent buildings for which we have not sufficient sources to make a reliable reconstruction.
From the start in the 17th century, the open interior of the block was used as city gardens. But over time various structures, from sheds to back houses and larger buildings expanded into this open space. It was criss-crossed by a few dark alleys, some of which went underneath the houses. Also most of the cesspits belonging to the houses on the streets were located here, archaeologically excavated in the early 1980s. The poorest of the people lived here in small dark apartments, while the remainder of open space was used by businesses for their stockpiles.
