The late 19th century (1890)

The year 1890 was chosen as it represents the start of a new phase of Vlooienburg, due to large infrastructural changes. The canals Houtgracht and Leprozengracht were backfilled and a new prominent square was created, the Waterlooplein in 1882. An additional reason for choosing this year is the capturing of the first overview picture of Vlooienburg in a photograph by G. H. Heinen, dated to 1895 (also depicted in the previous step).

From the middle of the 19th century onwards, more sources become available. In this period, photography gradually catches on, and the archives contain an increasing number of blueprints and other architectural drawings made for proposed renovations and new constructions.

Also the reliability of the maps increases with the introduction of cadastral mapping. Various maps dating to the 19th century provide useful insight in the location and size of the plots, and the extend of the build up area. The primary mapping source for this reconstruction was Loman's maps of Amsterdam neighbourhoords, made in 1876.
