Tall houses on the Amstel

One of the most remarkable changes at Vlooienburg is the new row of houses on the Amstel, built on the place of the former timber yards. These are very large houses for the more wealthy population.

Especially impressive was their joint facade on the Amstel. The city council had required that the facades should become a unified whole. This resulted in this 'modern' looking architecture. It is depicted many times, which reflects the impression this sight must have had on artists.
