Archaeological excavations

Ahead of the construction works, a part of the neighbourhood was investigated archaeologically in 1981. It revealed the foundations of the earliest 17th century Vlooienburg housing, their basements and many cess pits. Especially the latter are an invaluable source of information about the lives of the earliest inhabitants, as they contain household refuse that archaeologists can use as evidence for eating habits and material culture.

Recently, this archaeological material was studied in a research project at the University of Amsterdam.
