Over time, the Mill House underwent redevelopment, with the property being divided multiple times and extensions added to accommodate different family members. This efficient utilization of space reflects a larger trend in Leiden during the late sixteenth century. The city experienced a significant economic boom, leading to immense demographic pressure. As a result, the city expanded three times throughout the seventeenth century. The population surged from approximately 8,000 individuals in 1575 to around 60,000 by 1660.
