The mask comes from the Ngere, now called the Wee, from Ivory Coast. The Wee belong to the Kru-speaking peoples and live in the border region of Liberia and Ivory Coast. The mask dates from the first half of the 20th century and it is not known who made it.

There is a label on the back of the mask. On the label are the Dutch words 'afweermaskers, 'bosnegers' and ngere ivoorkust'. The term 'bosnegers' is offensive and is no longer used. The label was probably pasted in during the first half of the 20th century and is important for the provenance and history of the object.
