3.4 PROCESS: Tools of the 3D Trade – 3D Software Used

The source-based 3D reconstruction presented in this 3D scholarly edition was created using Blender, a versatile 3D modelling software widely used in digital heritage research. From here, the 3D models were exported individually or in groups as GLB files for upload into the Voyager authoring interface. Voyager is an open‑source 3D storytelling framework created by the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office to make the Institution’s growing corpus of 3D digitised objects accessible to wider public audiences through structured, narrative‑driven presentations.

As a 3D scholarly edition in Voyager was the intended outcome of this research project, the models were created in Blender with a sensitivity to this specific 3D viewing framework. The models are therefore optimised for a web-based 3D experience — meaning lower geometric detail of the 3D volumes, medium resolution for image textures and a minimally detailed landscape environment. At different stages across the project development, the models were imported into Voyager, to test their appearance, scale and coordination in this environment.
