2.6c SOURCES: 3D Interpretation of the Round Towers

Although the excavations indicated a slight variation in the dimensions of the four different round towers uncovered (e.g., overall diameter and wall thickness), the 3D reconstruction presents a single version duplicated for all reconstructed towers. As with the walls, the lower sections and construction technique are based on reliable evidence from primary sources, while the upper sections used secondary reference materials to inform the reconstruction.

For example, the 3D reconstruction report for the round corner towers of the Horbourg-Wihr castrum prepared by T. Nivola/INSA and shared on Sketchfab helped to inform the upper sections of the towers (see 3D viewer below). Discussions with Maastricht city archaeologists led to a decision for covered, circular roofing of the towers as presented in the castellum maquette of the Centre Ceramique, rather than an exposed rampart, as is presented in the Horbourg-Wihr reconstruction.

The presence and character of the windows and doors are conjecture as is the roofing construction. It is likely that the different towers had different heights, the relative height at 8 meters (not including foundation trench or roof) is an estimation.
