Internationalisation as Identity and Everyday Reality

At Maastricht University, internationalisation is both a strategic focus and a feature of everyday academic life. As of 2024, 61 percent of UM’s more than 23,000 students have a non-Dutch nationality, with 134 nationalities represented and nearly 8 percent coming from outside the European Economic Area. Over half of all students live within 100 kilometers of Maastricht, highlighting UM’s close ties to the Euregion (RTV Maastricht, 2024).

This cultural and linguistic diversity is reflected in UM’s educational model and institutional positioning. UM’s European outlook is reinforced by partnerships such as YUFE and its Brussels Hub, which fosters connections between research and policy. Initiatives like Studio Europa and ITEM connect academic work to developments at both the regional and European levels (Maastricht University, n.d.-e; Maastricht University, n.d.-f; Maastricht University, n.d.-g; Maastricht University, n.d.-h).
