Into the Database

The Tate Geological Museum uses Filemaker Pro, a database software that maintains a record of items in the museum. It has been heavily customized by the Field and Prep Lab Manager, J.P. Cavigelli.  There are separate sections for vertebrates, invertebrates and minerals. JP assigns the specimen a number (for Muffin it is TATE v7172 and i2200 for the fossil snail invertebrate). We discussed "fixing" the numbers of the bones being tail up instead of pelvis down and went with the prep version and a notation in the "comments" section of the database.

You may note from the image below that this is one of 53 records that make up the vertebrate data for Muffin; that Muffin is called a Haplocanthosaurus; with measurements and link to interactive 3D PDF files that are in an external system to save on storage space.
