INTRODUCTION

Mines are dark, deep places where light is needed to see and work. Mining lamps brought light into the dark and were therefore essential tools for miners when extracting coal. So too during the times of Dutch mining from around 1815 until 1974 (Domaniale Mine).

Throughout this tour you will become acquainted with a mining lamp – the Davy lamp - from Mr Ir. Cornelis E.P.M. Raedts’s special collection. During his 43 years of service as a mine director, he managed to build up a top class collection of close to 250 examples, which has now been included in the Register of protected cultural objects or protected collections https://data.collectienederland.nl/vc/wbc-2/search/?q=mijnlampen. In 2022 his collection was given to the Dutch Mining Museum on a long-term loan.

The Dutch Mining Museum is pleased to make this collection available to the public by means of these digital tours. A large part of the collection can also be admired physically in the museum's permanent exhibition.
