Architect Isaac Gosschalk was mobilized to design the many buildings of the gas factory, which were built from 1883 onwards.
His architectural style quickly gained recognition as the Dutch Neorenaissance, the style is easily recognizable with red and white bricks, tipycal of the architectures of holland cities. The most famous example of the Dutch Renaissance is the Rijksmuseum, which opened in the same period (1885).
The structures on the premises were conceived with a restrained approach. The factories were specifically designed to serve their purpose efficiently: housing machinery.
Gosschalk said the following about his style: ‘a building has style if it has character if it expresses what it is, provided it does so in a beautiful way’.
