Reconstructing Pieter de Graff's boeken kamer - Introduction

Depictions of early modern private libraries in the Dutch Republic are scarse. Apart from a couple of famous examples, such as the library of Jacob de Wilde drawn by his daughter Maria, we typically encounter rather standardized portrayals of scholars in their studies, as depicted in engravings.

The 3D reconstruction of this room results from the analysis of a combination of archival and building historical sources along with comparative materials. In addition to paintings and engravings, these comparative materials include seventeenth-century dollhouses, which are regarded as accurate (miniature) representations of domestic worlds.

This tour will take you through the sources and choices made in reconstructing this room and its content in 3D. The articles are reworked from C. Piccoli, Pieter de Graeff (1638-1707) and his treffelyke bibliotheek (Brill, 2025), chapter 6, which delves into this topic in more detail.
