Reconstructing the library: The cupboard

An oak cupboard (‘een eeken houte kas’) is the first item we find in Pieter de Graeff’s probate inventory in the section dedicated to his boeken kamer:

The estimated worth of this ‘kas’ was slightly below the mean, in comparison to other similar items in Pieter’s inventory. This suggests that this specific piece was neither particularly large nor intricately decorated. Consequently, I selected a relatively simple, medium-sized cupboard as the basis for the 3D reconstruction. Drawing from evidence in paintings, I propose that this piece of furniture was used for storing large volumes (such as the Blaeu’s Atlas that is listed in Pieter's book auction catalogue). Additionally, the crossed-out small iron chest that follows in the inventory was most likely safely stored inside this cupboard.
