Introduction

Welcome to the 3D Digital Edition of the Codex Cospi!

The Codex Cospi is one of the few surviving pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican pictorial manuscripts, making it an invaluable resource for understanding Mesoamerican indigenous culture. As with other ancient manuscripts, conveying its significance to museum visitors is challenging due to dim lighting, language barriers, and fragility, which limit physical interaction and accessibility. While 2D digital galleries improve access to parts of the manuscript that are hard to view in physical displays, they often lack storytelling and interactivity, reducing visitor engagement and comprehension. The 3D Digital Edition of the Codex Cospi was developed to provide an engaging and enriched understanding of the Codex’s cultural significance and complex layout through an interactive and multimodal space, suitable for different contexts (museums, entertainment, and education).

The edition is organised around three primary topics:

  1. History
  2. Contents
  3. Materials

Beginning with the 3D model visualisation, Voyager enables both linear and nonlinear exploration of the topics through three interconnected modes:

The creation of the Codex’s 3D model was done as part of the digital twin developed for the temporary exhibition The Other Renaissance: Ulisse Aldrovandi and the Wonders of the World (Balzani et al. 2024), one of the main pilot studies within the CHANGES project (SPOKE 4). This edition aims to deepen the understanding of a key exhibit piece, allowing it to transcend its role in the wider museum narrative and emerge as the central subject of its own story.
