pl. 12-13 (obverse): The four temples almanac

Audio guide:

The four temples almanac covers plates 12-13 of the obverse and contains four scenes of gods burning incense in front of temples with various birds inside. Each scene corresponds to a cardinal direction and a quarter of the ritual "year". The reading begins in the upper part of plate 12, where we see the sun god Tonatiuh, continues in the lower part of the same plate with the frost god Itzlacoliuhqui ("Curved Obsidian Blade"), then moves to the lower part of plate 13 with the maize god Cinteotl, and ends in the upper part of plate 13 with Mictlantecuhtli, "Lord of the Place of the Dead".

The overall arrangement of the images is X-like, with the two yellow, beneficial gods contrasting with the two black, ominous ones. Along the left edge of the plates, the twenty-day signs are arranged according to their association with a particular cardinal direction.
