pl. 9-11 (obverse): The Venus almanac

Audio guide:

Plates 9-12 of the obverse are occupied by the Venus almanac, composed of five similar scenes. In each scene Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli ("Lord of the House of Dawn"), i.e. Venus as Morning Star - depicted as a deadly skeletal warrior -, throws his arrows at different beings or things: according to a boustrophedon reading order, they are the maize god Cinteotl (pl. 9, lower part), the water goddess Chalchiuhtlicue (pl. 9, upper part), a water-filled mountain (pl. 10, upper part), a throne (pl. 10, lower part), and a jaguar (pl. 11, lower part).

Each scene represents the calamities that could be caused by the helical rise of Venus on the days listed on the left side of the plates. The killing of the maize god, for example, would have meant "famine," while the "killing" of the throne would have indicated the possibility of political turmoil.
