Despite Barbie’s (2023) scenario being questionable at times, the movie still appears to have exerted positive influence on the population. Traditionally, critiques have said that the Barbie brand and franchise had a negative impact on people, particularly young girls. The reasoning behind this being mainly her unattainable beauty ideals (Rome, 2024). However, it can be argued that the recent live-action movie has contributed positively to female empowerment (Ho, 2023).
Initially conceived to show to young girls that they could be whoever they wanted to be, Barbie’s inception marked a departure from other toys that typically mirrored parental roles (Ho, 2023). Throughout the years, the doll evolved into a role model, adapting to society, departing from her original « fashion » self and becoming more inclusive. During this transition, Barbie became an independent woman, emphasizing a feminist message, with Ken assuming a secondary role (Ho, 2023). This portrayal of this « new » Barbie is exemplified by Margot Robbie’s character in the Barbie movie (2023).
The original message of Barbie aimed to teach girls that women could do anything. As previously mentioned in the first article, the live-action movie gained extreme popularity and was critically acclaimed. This phenomenon shows to society that woman directed-films (Greta Gerwig) are productions that the audience wants to watch (Ho, 2023). The film shows current feminist struggles, as well as ancient ones that have been occurring for a long time, offering a critique of both genders while emphasizing the societal value of each. Its narrative offers a positive message, encompassing body positivity, acknowledging elements of mental health and empowering women (Rome, 2024).
One could thus argue that the Barbie movie (2023) had a positive feminist impact and message on society.
