Voyager Process

The final part of our process was through the prototype software “Smithsonian Voyager”. The tool is part of the PURE3D project, developed to enable users to create and report research and articles about their 3D model, utilizing a variety of features embedded in the software (Pure3D, n.d.). Among these all the key features are annotations, articles, and tours.  These three components of the software are essential to be able to tell a story. Annotations are simple identifiers that are tagged throughout the model, to give context to each part, and may contain different multimodal options. Articles are created to write the research and information on the 3D Model, they can contain images, videos, hyperlinks, and other multimodal pieces, and are much longer than the annotations. While annotations can incorporate links to different articles, Tours are where most information is collected and incorporated together. These tours are a mix of articles, camera movements, and other Voyager features, to offer the audience a unique learning experience (Smishsonian Digitization, n.d.).

In the case of our 3D Model, in addition to the audio introduction, we chose to separate our research into three different tours :

  1. Cuteness and Marketing, in which we develop on the usage of Baby Yoda as a tool for marketers, through its cuteness.
  2. The Star Wars Franchise, in which we develop on Star Wars, The Mandalorian, as well as Baby Yoda development throughout the franchise.
  3. Development Process of the 3d Digital Scholarly Edition, in which we develop on the process of creating a 3D Model from scratch.

Throughout our time using Voyager, we did not encounter many issues, as the program is unambiguous and we were provided with instructions that were not overly complicated. Our utilization of a large number of Voyager features has improved our different tours and articles with a more insightful context and better depiction of examples.
