This project portrays the Sheriff Woody Pride doll. The toy is popularly known as the protagonist from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story animated film franchise (since 1995). Woody is a tall, skinny, long-limbed soft plastic doll, with a disproportionately large head, which destabilises the toy and prevents it from standing upright without support. The Woody doll is approximately 38cm tall without his hat on and about 41cm with his hat on. The hat however is attached to the back in the version of the toy we had.
Woody’s outfit contains stereotypical elements of cowboy attire, from the cowboy hat to his cowboy boots. Furthermore, he wears a red bandana around his neck, a yellow shirt with red squares, a cow-print vest and a pair of blue jeans. The boots were embossed with cacti and other figures associated with the Wild West and finished with a yellow spur. His belt has a bull imprinted on the buckle and his vest has a golden star-shaped “SHERIFF” badge pinned to it. On his back is a white hoop and mechanical string, when pulled, it plays one of Woody’s five catchphrases. Andy’s (Woody’s owner) iconic signature, is visible on the underside of Woody’s right boot.
In the movies, Woody stands out with his witty, ironic humour, with many flaws in his personality Woody goes through a lot of character development throughout the franchise. Accordingly, we take a wider lens to observe the franchise's narrative over the years. Woody embodies Andy’s favourite toy in the movies. By exploring Sheriff Woody Pride, we hope to encapsulate the various perspectives that can be used to study cultural, social, and political statements that this toy mediates.
