This Edition was created as part of the course Creating Digital Collections (DCU4012) in the Master Media Studies: Digital Collections at Maastricht University. As part of this course, we were asked to work in pairs to create a 3D digital scholarly edition that forms part of the larger digital collection “Toys with a Voice”. An edition aimed at digitising some of our most beloved toys and exploring their broader significance using practical skills and theories that we previously learned as part of this Master.
In this course we gained both theoretical and practical skills helping us to create this edition. We discussed topics such as the authenticity of digitalised objects, the advantages of virtual versus physical objects, and multimodality to convey messages in the digital era.
Furthermore we learned practical skills to create the 3D model and putting it into this interface so that the viewer can engage with it. As such we learned how to use a digital camera and create high quality images. Which we needed for the photogrammetry, for which we learned to use Agisoft Metashape to create the actual 3D model. Lastly, we were taught how to use and take advantage of all the functionalities of the interface Voyager.
By digitising this Ken doll its material essence is transferred and made accessible through this interface, enabling the viewer to engage in a unique way with this doll. Arguably, this can either augment or diminish the significance of the toy.
