Our initial arrangement was to have the chessboard on a turntable inside a lightbox with a white background. While this arrangement worked well, it caused issues of depth of field—the pieces in the foreground were sharp, but the ones in the background were always fuzzy due to the camera's focus.
To remedy this, we moved the project outside and put the chessboard on a wooden table in front of natural light. This provided us with greater control over lighting and better overall focus. The pieces were still problematic due to inconsistent focus and glare. We ultimately had to shoot the chessboard and the pieces separately and then composite them together in post-production.
