Afterword

This project certainly made us more knowledgeable about chess as a cultural artifact. Although we were already well aware of the historical and strategic importance of chess, the act of creating a digital version of the board and a scholarly edition added new dimensions to our respect.

Again, the project proved successful in verifying the advantages of digitization as a means to conserve and distribute cultural heritage artifacts. While clearly the wooden nature of the chessboard helped in our digitization, the project also reaffirmed the advantages of making good decisions—both on the chessboard and how we proceeded to schedule and organize the tours.

We sincerely hope that the audience will leave with a more appreciative eye for chess—not just as a game, but as a work of human strategy, culture, and intelligence. While we do not expect to make anyone a fervent chess player, we do hope to generate interest and an appreciation for the game's worthy history and cultural significance.
