The goals of the opening, the initial phase of a game of chess, are piece development, central square control, and king safety on the board. Piece development is marked by introducing minor pieces, bishops, and knights into the game by putting them in such positions that they are able to influence different squares on the board in such a manner that they are made as useful as possible so that the board can be controlled to a higher degree. If piece development is done well, the pieces act as the foundation for offense and defense due to their extensive coverage of the different squares on the board. There are several well-known openings, such as the Sicilian Defense, Queen’s Gambit, and King’s Indian Defense. These openings have different approaches to gain early control over the board.
