“We like the idea of a strong, independent, adventurous, and family-focused girl being her role model” says Ryan Hughes (2020), reflecting on his two-years daughter’s love for Moana. He describes the film as more than just a fun story, it is a meaningful lesson about family and knowing where you come from.
Moana is filled with powerful family messages. Polynesian genealogist Miyamoto Loretta Jensen (2021) highlights a few key lessons.
First, follow your heart, even when it challenges family expectations. Moana’s father, fearing for her safety, tries to keep her from the ocean. But Moana listens to her inner voice and chooses to explore, ultimately helping her people. It shows that growth sometimes means stepping beyond what is familiar, even if it means going against those you love.
Second, understanding your past helps you understand yourself. Moana’s grandmother, Tala, tells her the story of their wayfinding ancestors, giving her the courage to accept who she is. Tala also gives Moana a necklace with the Heart of Te Fiti, and it turns into something that reminds her of her family and helps her keep going.
Finally, the story shows that our ancestors are always with us. Moana is guided by the spirit of her grandmother throughout her journey, especially in the most difficult moments.
