Oceanic Cultural Trust: The Heart Behind Moana's Authenticity

Exploring Moana’s history brought us to the official Disney website, where Zachary (2024) shares an amazing story about how the movie came to life. To ensure that Moana’s story is both authentic and respectful of the cultures and histories of Oceania, a unique process began long before the movie’s official release.

Five years before the film hit theaters, filmmakers John Musker and Ron Clements went on a research trip to the Pacific Islands. During their journey, they met with experts in anthropology, history, and culture. This trip sparked the idea to create a new team of advisors dedicated to guiding the film’s creation.

This group, later known as the Oceanic Cultural Trust, worked closely with Disney to discuss every detail from costuming to the mythology that forms the heart of the story. Their goal was to make sure that every element of Moana was true to the rich heritage of Oceania.

People from the Pacific Islands were happy to share their  knowledge, proud to contribute their expertise to help create an accurate portrayal of their traditions and beliefs. Kalikolehua Hurley, the head of the Oceanic Cultural Trust, notes that the team’s involvement goes beyond film creation. They’ve helped develop new Disney products, toys, and even attractions at Walt Disney World Resort. “Usually when there’s something Moana-related, I’ll get a call” says Hurley.

So behind the brave, adventurous Moana is a whole team of people who helped shape her character - people who shared the knowledge, stories, and values that have been passed down through generations.
