Unlike the traditional Disney princesses who often have slim and delicate physiques, Moana represents a realistic Polynesian woman. Her broad shoulders, strong legs, and athletic build align with the historical and contemporary realities of Polynesian people, who are renowned for their physical endurance and seafaring skills (Pacific Geographies, 2021). This physical representation challenges Western beauty standards, offering young audiences a protagonist whose body is built for action, rather than just aesthetics.
Studies on Polynesian body types indicate that strength and resilience have been crucial for survival, especially in societies which depended on long-distance oceanic navigation (BBC Culture, 2016). Moana’s design reflects this legacy, making her a more accurate and relatable representation for Polynesian audiences while also challenging the traditional princess image. Her strong arms, thick legs, and sturdy frame reflect the real-world physiques of Pacific Islanders, whose history of wayfinding and oceanic exploration required great physical strength. Unlike previous princesses whose physiques suggested fragility, Moana's body is designed for action -whether paddling a canoe, climbing a mountain, or swimming against strong currents.
Beyond the physical representation, Moana’s character contributes to a broader discussion on body image. Disney’s decision to present a protagonist who does not conform to traditional beauty standards sends a powerful message to young viewers. It reinforces that strength and capability should be celebrated over unrealistic ideals. Studies suggest that exposure to diverse body types in media contributes to more positive self-image among children, making Moana an important step toward more inclusive representation (Zhai, 2023). By embracing a more diverse body type, Disney not only enhances cultural representation but also encourages healthier body image perceptions among young audiences.
