This 3D Scholarly Edition was developed as part of the course ‘Creating Digital Collections’, within the master Media Studies: Digital Cultures at Maastricht University. The course focused on creating a 3D model of a toy object, combined with a digital scholarly edition. The overarching theme of this series is ‘Toys with Voice’, in which we were challenged to approach toys as meaningful artefacts within broader social, historical and cultural contexts.
The toy we chose is a Merida figure from the Disney Infinity gameplay. It is a figure, made of PVC, with a plastic base in which an NFC Chip is placed. This NFC Chip is needed to connect the figure to the game. At first, we were particularly drawn to the character of Merida because of the feminist narrative behind her. After some more research we found out that there was also a lot to tell about the Scottish aspects of the film in which Merida is the main character.
