Merida: The Princess Who Chose Her Own Fate

Princess Merida is the main character in the Disney and Pixar film Brave, marking the first female protagonist in a Pixar film (Alegre, 2021). She is the sixteen-year-old daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor (Arranz, 2023), rulers of the Scottish kingdom of DunBroch. Merida has three younger brothers, the mischievous triplets Harris, Hubert, and Hamish (Pradani, 2016).

Merida is instantly recognisable for her wild red curls, piercing blue eyes, and determined, free spirit. Unlike other Disney princesses, she is a skilled archer, adept at sword fighting, and an expert horseback rider. She enjoys exploring the wilderness and seeks adventure and independence rather than adhering to the refined and elegant behaviour expected of her (Pradani, 2016). This free-spirited nature often leads to conflicts with her mother, Queen Elinor, who tries to prepare her for her role as a princess (Pradani, 2016). The character of Merida can be described as fearless, caring, stubborn, reckless, mature and responsible (Aprilia & Sutrisno, 2020).
