Affordances, Challenges and Difficulties

While creating the model went quite well, we did come across some challenges.  The first challenge was to keep the box of UNO upright during the capture session. We managed this by filling the box with cards and paper and putting adhesive gum underneath the box to keep it upright. To prevent movement of the cards during the capture session, we taped the cards together. This worked out pretty well in the end. Another challenge was to get rid of all the background things in the 3D model, like the piece of foam we put our model on during the capture session to keep it on its side. Luckily, using the rough model and removing excess bits of the model we were able to get quite useful masks. Perhaps the biggest challenge was the structure of the model. As you can still see a bit on the model here, the surface of the box and the cards in the model is not as flat as the actual box and cards are in reality. We tried to fix this in Metashape by smoothing the surface, but we only managed to a certain extent.

Creating this scholarly edition in Voyager really gave us the opportunity to put UNO in context. Creating two thematically different tours, our aim was to tell the story of UNO and its social and cultural relevance, as well as the values of, and behind, card games in general. Voyager really allowed us to create this museum-like tour around UNO, as the annotations point out what the viewer should pay attention to and why. Voyager’s affordances allowed us to put in images and videos in the articles to create a more interactive experience, and we tried our best to find materials which added to creating an understanding of the contents discussed.
