This tour explores the objective and influence behind this little doll dressed in a traditional Dutch dress. In the first tour, the focus lies on the traditional Volendam costume. The cultural heritage and embedded meaning of the different pieces of clothing are further discussed in ‘Exploring the Dutch Doll’. This tour examines the reproduced expectations associated with the doll and its clothing.









Throughout this tour, different aspects are illuminated to ensure that the discussion follows a clear guideline. In order to situate the doll, after this introduction this tour will begin with insight into the collection of dolls with similar but culturally different clothing, and further discuss how these dolls reflect society. The doll that is the center of this narrative is a display of Dutch stereotypes, which will be pointed out and explained in favor of the argumentation. Following this, the tour will explore the childlike features of the doll and build up on the question of whom this doll is intended for. The tour then looks more specifically at how this influences young children, especially little girls. Because of the focus on girls and women, the male representation will be taken up subsequently, to allow an illumination of all the important perspectives.
