As a medium of representation, the doll has many signifiers that allow the transfer of underlying messages. The Dutch stereotypes for one are further reproduced through the cliched depiction of Dutch people as blond and blue-eyed. Another displayed message of the doll is the traditional values of the Volendam women’s costume. Within this costume, various historical norms and expectations are visualized. Through this visualization, the reflection and reproduction of these norms and expectations are made possible.
A major part of the values that the doll's costume is reproducing are rather outdated. Especially the underlying modesty that the costume and the cultural traditions that are embodied by it are signifying. The costume is very modest, with the high neckline, the long skirt, long undergarments, and stockings, that show barely any skin. These aspects advocate a right way to dress, which by the example of the doll not revealing. For one the doll is through its childlike features and the women’s clothing further promotes a way of displaying children in grown-up roles. Which therefore nourishes an emphasis on children to aspire to grow up and act as adults from an early age. Secondly, the outdated norms of modesty and female objectification through marriage, are exemplified through the doll. Through these underlying messages, an impression is created that can further influence the children that are encountering these reproductions.
