The process - Voyager

Since the 3D model is a part of a bigger project, the next step was to make it accessible to the public. We used Voyager, in which we created tours that provide contextual background for the visitors and bring their attention to details of the 3D model. Thanks to Voyager, we were able to add audio that introduces you to the world of model trains and increases the level of immersion, annotations that draw your attention to important parts of the toy, and photos and video that allow you to see the model against a wider background. Each tour is broken down into individual steps that will guide you as you browse. Between each step of the tour the camera moves to the corresponding part of the model which creates an engaging experience. However, should you prefer to explore the model on your own, this is also possible.

Voyager, developed by The Smithsonian, is a part of PURE3D – a research infrastructure dedicated to publishing and safeguarding 3D scholarly works. We have decided to create two tours that tell the story of the object. The first tour focuses on the historical background of the toy – history of trains, model trains, the company behind our toy – as well as providing insights into the hobby of collecting them. The second tour examines model trains from a gender perspective. It explores how males dominated the world of model trains and how this stereotypical has persistently marginalized women.

What you can see here is the result of this work, allowing you to explore not only the 3D model, but also familiarize yourself with the toy’s history and cultural significance through interactive tours.
