2.6 Male representation in Disney movies

(Beauty and the Beast)

3. Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast was released in 1991, and it’s said that it shows extreme stereotypes among Disney movies (Male Stereotypes, n.d.; Wiki, C. T. D. n.d.). Gaston reflects the stereotype of the ideal man to be popular with women because he is big, strong, rich, and handsome. His personality is also arrogant and self-indulgent, which might also present dominant masculinity as a kind of patriarchy (Male stereotypes, n.d.).
On the other hand, the Beast (Prince Adam) portrays a typically masculinity image, where the fact that he is a beast and strong. Also, the scene where he treats Belle like an object and especially the scene where he tries to get her to have dinner with him forcefully shows the dominance of men over women (Male stereotypes, n.d.).

Therefore, some male characters represent certain gender stereotypes in Disney movies such as taking a dominant position over women through the expression of physical strength and the authority given to them by certain roles. It will be interesting to look into how male characters are represented not only the female characters in Disney films.
