2.4 Male representation in Disney movies (Hercules)

1. Hercules

Hercules, released in 1997, is a modernization of Greek mythology that tells the story of the protagonist
Hercules' growth and his love affair with Megara as he becomes embroiled in the struggle for supremacy on Olympus (Male stereotypes, n.d.; Primo, 2018).
It has been said that Heracles' heroic character, phenomenal strength, and idealized masculine body may construct stereotypes of how men should act in society (Male stereotypes, n.d.; Primo, 2018).
However, Hercules has a certain difference from other male heroines in Disney movies, which is that his heroic act of saving women strips the hero of his position and power. Thus, the ideal male representation expressed in Hercules is not one of status or power, but of physical strength (Primo, 2018).
