In addition, it's said that Western media often portray Chinese women as submissive to "Confucian values" and the patriarchal structure. Because the creative team was not Chinese, Disney has been accused of stereotyping Chinese cultures and society, as if all Chinese are (Weng, 2020). Wang (2021) says that Disney's Mulan trivializes the historical and cultural heritage of China by forcing elements of the story to fit into Westernizing it to make it more acceptable to a large audience. This eventually can lead to distort the plot and history of folk tales, which the Chinese have protected for a long time (Wang, 2021).
Even though, in article 1 of this tour, it was noted that "Mulan" is an effective strategy for promoting China's unique culture to the world, misrepresentation and stereotyping of culture and race in the movies, could cause criticism from audiences. Therefore, effective cultural and racial reflections in the movie require creators from diverse backgrounds to be hired, and they must have a deep understanding of different cultures and traditions to avoid misrepresenting other cultures.
