Despite Disney's best efforts, the live-action "Mulan" failed to be successful in the Chinese market. In Shanghai, only 200,000 of the city's 14 million people went to see the movie (Business Insider Nederland, 2020). However, even though the live-action “Mulan” was not successful, if it’s been seen worldwide since the movie was first released in 1998, the character of Mulan has been popular among many young girls as a brave and independent Disney princess, although she is not a royal princess. Mulan was a global blockbuster for Disney in the end, earning more than $300 million worldwide in total. As a result, Mulan has been incorporated into doll parades and events at Disney for marketing.
Mulan and other characters that appeared in the movie have appeared in various parades and shows until now. At the Disney California Adventure Park, Shanghai Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland when they have Chinese New Year celebrations, Mulan and other characters show up there. Mulan has also appeared in parades at Paris Disneyland in the past (Ace, 2024; Disneyland Official Site, n.d.).
