According to Leeuwen (2015), multimodality refers to the combination of diverse semiotic modes including language, image, intonation, and features, in the communicative discourse, multimodality incorporates various modes into multimodal texts and applications. During the research, multimodality can promote collaborative work and innovation (Campano et al., 2020).
In our 3D scholarly project, the analysis highlighted Mulan’s Chinese ancient dress, her facial expressions and her confident posture, as well as delving into the semantics of the Ballad of Mulan. By exploring multimodality in this 3D model, we compared the original meaning of it and the movie adaptions from Disney and integrated postcolonialism and feminism into the Mulan 3D model with annotations, images, and videos. With the affordance of Vayager, those additional modes can offer multiple interactions and rich layers to help viewers gain a better understanding of the social and historical significance of Mulan.
