Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie

In 1928, Mickey Mouse, played the role of a steamboat captain in the animation Steamboat Willie, which  is considered to be Mickey’s debut appearance (Schiffman, 2023). Through long nights of work, funding struggles, creating connections in the animation industry, and multiple tries at getting the sound and music right Steamboat Willie was finally complete and played at the Colony Theatre in New York on November 18th, 1928. This is when Walt Disney finally started to receive recognition for his work (Smith, 2014). This was a pioneering move in animation as it was one of the first sound and image synchronised cartoons in the world, where the recorded sounds matched what was happening on screen accordingly (McCann, 2023) and Mickey was part of it all. This pioneering in sound became an animation industry norm (Smith, 2014).

Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie (1928)

During a time when there wasn’t optimistic and positive comedy narratives in animation, Steamboat Willie came out and brought happiness to the viewers (Puturi, 2019). This animated short features Mickey Mouse steering a steamboat while whistling, dancing, and spending time with Minnie Mouse (Tatham, 2019). This positivity and comedy largely came from the inspiration of Charlie Chaplin and his expressive and comedic movements in his films (Puturi, 2019). The black and white image of Mickey holding the steering wheel, wearing his steamboat captain’s hat, and with puckered, whistling lips even became Disney’s logo in 2007, reminding audiences of the origins and importance of this early animation (McCann, 2023).
