The Evolution of Mickey Mouse’s Appearances

The evolution of Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse underwent a certain number of small changes in his appearance over the decades. This evidences show how Disney sought to constantly develop his mouse to appeal to the greatest possible audiences.

In Plane Crazy (1928), Mickey’s head shows the features of a rat rather than a mouse, as a result of a very elongated nose. This design was not in accordance with the “baby schema” and was later replaced by a shorter but more roundish nose contributing to Mickey’s hallmark cute features. Also, his famous yellow oversized shoes and iconic white gloves were still absent in Plane Crazy. Lastly, there was still no coherence in the number of fingers on his hands (Hellmann, 2020). This changed with the first appearance of his white gloves in The Opry House (1929), and in The Gallopin’ Gaucho (1928), Mickey’s iconic shoes were introduced (Schiffman, 2023).

Significant design changes also occurred with Mickey’s eyes. In Plane Crazy, Mickey’s eyes occupied most of his face and had pupils. Later, in Steamboat Willie (1928), a redesign meant that Mickey’s eyes were reduced to his pupils only, that is small black oval shapes, giving him nevertheless a range of facial expressions. In print cartoons in 1929, Mickey appeared “pie-eyed”. This means that he showed black eyes shaped like a pie, with one piece of the pie missing, the pupil (Hellmann, 2020). In the 2000s, a computer-generated television series called Mickey Mouse Clubhouse featured Mickey Mouse and his friends. Here he also has oval eyes, again with black pupils (Schiffman, 2023).

The only constant in the many small changes in the design of Mickey Mouse is his red shorts with buttons, but even here the colour and shape of the buttons changed between white/yellow and round/oval (Schiffman, 2023).

Curiously, in 2013, Disney went retro and presented the new animated series Mickey Mouse in which Mickey appeared in his early design, including his pie-shaped eyes and the original nose that had given him a more rat-like appearance (Apple, 2020).
