Looking Back: Manon's Reflection on the 3D Process

The process of creating this 3D scholarly edition began with the digitalisation of the Funko Pop. We started the process by discussing as a team how we would go ahead with the 3D digitisation process. Florence and I gathered again to take the photos of our Funko Pop but after processing the photos into Metashape we realised that our photos hadn’t aligned which meant that we needed to retake our photos. However, we used the time to improve on what we had done previously and learn from our previous mistakes. Indeed, you can find more information on the 3D digitisation process and my reflective thoughts on it on my blog which I will link here.

We found ourselves in a difficult situation when it came to combining the two chunks which resulted in some problems when we imported the model into Voyager. In Voyager our model had holes and what looked like an acne problem, so we kept working on our model to refine her and fill the holes she had alongside writing and researching the articles and working into Voyager. We worked as a team to write the articles, helping each other and supporting each other. However, the research we did to write our articles was very interesting. Previously I had not thought to look into the significance of Sansa Stark’s costumes, whether it’d be at her coronation as shown in the Funko Pop, or in the earlier seasons.

Processing of the 3D Model

Yet throughout the entire research process I learnt about details in the costumes throughout the 8 seasons of the Game of Thrones show, I researched into feminism in the show focusing on the main female characters of the show. There was a lot of  information and a lot of research done on feminism in Game of Thrones and on other aspects of the show and there is no doubt we could have kept reading and researching for a long time. In hindsight, there was quite a lot more that could have been covered such as the environmental impact of plastic Funko Pop! toys however we chose to go in a different direction focusing on the character of Sansa Stark and her significance in the story and world of Game of Thrones. We worked well as a team to produce a very nice 3D scholarly edition in our opinions. I believe that our communication with each other worked well and we were able to resolve issues that we came across in plenty of time. We learned to divide and conquer to be at our most effective.

In conclusion, working on this 3D scholarly edition was, without a doubt, a learning curve. From the first set of photos that we took to the implementation of the model into Voyager and Pure 3D we faced difficulties and steps back. Yet, every time we re-assessed the situation and learned from our mistakes. When our first set of photos didn’t turn out the way we had hoped we re-took them better. Overall, this was a really interesting process, although the 3D digitisation process was difficult, the research was fascinating and learnt a lot throughout the process.
