By creating a 3D model, we were aiming to mediate our object transcending text. This project aims to show how images, sound and movement are equal to language to convey a story (Campano et al., 2020). Accordingly, we applied Multimodality in Voyager to combine diverse ways of communication in one medium as proposed by Campano et al. (2020). Therefore, our project did not only include text but also the 3D model as well as an audio guide and videos to convey the narrative in different ways. Combined, these different modes of communication convey different perspectives and aspects to create a whole new narrative. This is reasoned by the fact that although visual and verbal forms of communication might have the same meaning, the way they are conveyed makes them different (Van Leeuwen, 2015). Accordingly, the way we decided to frame and communicate the object, shapes its perception.
Further, multimodality aims to support creativity and communication from diverse perspectives (Campano et al., 2020). Additionally, it includes critical theories and perspectives (Campano et al., 2020). Therefore, our framing of the object includes the postcolonial theory of orientalism to include a critical view on the problematic use of Middle Eastern cultures in Western media. Besides, we aimed to critically reflect on the way the toy industry sets different standards for boys and girls while promoting a binary and heteronormative agenda. Lastly, we introduced the different narratives and origins behind the mythical creature of the dragon. Therefore, this project combined different perspectives, discussions, and types of communication to convey multimodality.
